- Description: Short on time? These casual games have a natural stopping point, so a 15-minute break stays 15 minutes. Wordle, Marvel Snap, Rocket League and more.

Fifteen minutes is an awkward amount of time. It is too short for a film and too long to just stare at your phone in a queue. For a lot of people, though, it is a good length for a game. According to the Entertainment Software Association's 2026 report, 212.3 million Americans, about two-thirds of the population aged 5 to 90, play video games for at least an hour a week, and mobile devices are the most used platform at 80% of players.

Puzzle games are the most popular genre on mobile, chosen by 66% of mobile players. The casual games that suit a short break have one thing in common: a clear end point. Here are seven that fit, why they fit, and what each one costs.

## What makes a good 15-minute game?

A game suits a short break when it meets four conditions:

1. **It ends on its own.** A match, a puzzle or an in-game day finishes without you having to hunt for a place to stop.
2. **It saves your progress.** You can close the app and come back without losing anything.
3. **It does not punish you for leaving.** Some games have long timed rounds or penalties for quitting, which can turn a break into an hour.
4. **It works with what you have.** A break game should not need a console in another room.

There is also a good reason to protect that break. A 2022 meta-analysis in PLOS ONE looked at 22 studies of micro-breaks, nine of them 10 minutes or shorter, and found that short breaks reduced fatigue and increased vigour, although they did not improve overall task performance.

## 1\. Wordle and Connections (New York Times Games)

- **Best for:** warming up your brain
- **Platforms:** browser and the NYT Games app
- **Cost:** free

Wordle gives you six guesses to find a five-letter word, with one new puzzle a day for everyone. Software engineer Josh Wardle released it in October 2021, and in January 2022 The New York Times bought it for a price in the "low seven figures".

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are colour-coded by difficulty, from yellow (easiest) to purple (hardest), and you can make up to four mistakes before the puzzle ends. A new one appears every day.

**Why it fits:** the game tells you when to stop. Solving both daily puzzles usually takes well under 15 minutes, with time left to compare scores with friends.

## 2\. Marvel Snap

- **Best for:** quick competitive play
- **Platforms:** iOS, Android and Windows
- **Cost:** free to play, with optional purchases

Marvel Snap was developed by Second Dinner and released on 18 October 2022\. Each player has a 12-card deck, and the winner is whoever controls two of the three locations after six turns. Games typically last a few minutes.

**Why it fits:** you can play several full games in a 15-minute break. The six-turn limit keeps games short, although some cards and locations change the number of turns. In 2025 Skystone Games took over publishing after the game briefly disappeared from US app stores.

## 3\. Pokémon TCG Pocket

- **Best for:** collectors and Pokémon fans
- **Platforms:** iOS and Android
- **Cost:** free to play, with optional purchases

Pokémon TCG Pocket is a simplified mobile version of the Pokémon trading card game, developed by Creatures Inc. and DeNA and released worldwide on 30 October 2024\. It passed 100 million downloads within months. Decks have 20 cards, Energy comes automatically from an Energy Zone, and the first player to score three points wins. You can also open a free booster pack of five cards every 12 hours.

**Why it fits:** open your free pack, play a round or two against the computer or another player, then close the game.

## 4\. Rocket League

- **Best for:** fast action on PC or console
- **Platforms:** PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch
- **Cost:** free to play, with optional purchases

Rocket League is football played with rocket-powered cars. It was developed by Psyonix, which Epic Games bought in 2019, and it went free to play on 23 September 2020\. A standard match lasts five minutes, with sudden-death overtime if the score is level.

**Why it fits:** two matches plus time in the lobby usually fit into 15 minutes, although overtime can stretch a match. Do not start a competitive match you might not finish: leaving one early earns a matchmaking ban, starting at five minutes and getting longer for repeat offences.

## 5\. Blitz chess

- **Best for:** a quick strategy fix
- **Platforms:** free sites such as Lichess and Chess.com, in a browser or on your phone
- **Cost:** free

Chess has a reputation as a slow game, but it does not have to be. Under FIDE rules, a blitz game gives each player 10 minutes or less on the clock. With a common 5+0 time control, each player has five minutes for the whole game, so the game cannot last longer than 10 minutes. Just do not let your clock run out while you think.

**Why it fits:** the clock guarantees an ending. If you only have a few minutes, the daily puzzles on most chess sites are even shorter.

## 6\. Mini Motorways

- **Best for:** calm, focused play with a clear goal
- **Platforms:** Apple Arcade, Steam (PC and Mac) and Nintendo Switch
- **Cost:** included with Apple Arcade, or a one-off purchase on Steam and Switch

In Mini Motorways, from New Zealand studio Dinosaur Polo Club, you draw roads that connect houses to buildings of the same colour. As the city grows, traffic builds up. If too many trips pile up at one building, a warning timer starts, and when it fills, the run is over.

**Why it fits:** each run is self-contained and lasts as long as your skill allows. The first few minutes are easy and the difficulty builds as the city grows, so it suits players who want something absorbing but not endless. It came out on Apple Arcade in September 2019 and later on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

## 7\. Stardew Valley (one day at a time)

- **Best for:** a relaxed, quiet break
- **Platforms:** PC, consoles and mobile
- **Cost:** one-time purchase

Stardew Valley is a farming game that has sold more than 41 million copies. It is a long game made of short pieces: a full in-game day, from 6 am to 2 am, takes about 14 minutes of real time.

**Why it fits:** a 15-minute break is just right for one day of farming, fishing or visiting town. One rule to plan around: the game only saves when your character goes to bed at the end of the day, so quitting partway through loses that day. In single-player mode, time stops while menus are open.

## Quick comparison

| Blitz chess | 10 minutes or less per player | Browser, mobile | Free |
| Mini Motorways | One run, ends on its own | Apple Arcade, PC, Switch | Paid or subscription |
| Stardew Valley | About 14 minutes per in-game day | PC, consoles, mobile | Paid |

## How to keep 15 minutes to 15 minutes

Short games can still eat a whole evening. A few habits help:

- **Pick games with a fixed end.** Matches, daily puzzles and in-game days are better for a break than endless modes.
- **Use your phone's limits.** Screen Time on iPhone and Digital Wellbeing on Android both let you set daily app limits.
- **Watch the shop.** Three of these games are free to play with optional purchases. Decide on a budget before you start.

## Conclusion

No single game is best for a quick break. The good ones are built around a natural stopping point: a daily puzzle, a six-turn card battle, a five-minute car football match, a blitz clock or one day on the farm. Pick the one that suits your mood, whether that is a word warm-up, a quick competitive game, a strategy fix or a calm day in Stardew Valley. When the time is up, close the app and get on with your day. A good break game is a small thing you finish, not something that takes over your day.
