- Description: Safety, abundance and softness. How cozy games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing found a huge audience of players who want to unwind, not compete.

For years, the loudest games have been games about winning. Shooters, sports games and battle royales reward quick reflexes and punish mistakes. Then a quieter kind of game moved into the mainstream. Its players water plants, tidy rooms, sell cups of coffee and chat with friendly neighbours, and there is nothing to defeat.

These are cozy games, and their growth says a lot about why people play. For relaxed gamers who come to unwind rather than compete, a game without urgency can be a place to rest instead of a challenge. This article looks at what makes a game "cozy", where the style came from and why it found such a large audience.

## What makes a game "cozy"?

There is no official rulebook, but one definition comes up again and again. In 2017, a group of designers at Project Horseshoe, a yearly game design think tank, wrote a report on coziness in games. Its authors included Tanya X. Short of Kitfox Games and designer Daniel Cook.

They described coziness as the strength of three feelings a game creates:

1. **Safety:** there is no danger or risk.
2. **Abundance:** the player's needs are met, so there is room to think about more than survival.
3. **Softness:** strong visual and audio cues tell the player they are somewhere low-stress.

The same group said cozy games give players "control over pacing" and space for emotional and social upkeep. In practice they are usually non-violent and built around relaxing activities such as farming, gathering, decorating and getting to know characters, and they tend to be open-ended. The label is not fixed, and fans have long argued about which games deserve it. What they agree on is the feeling: a cozy game is defined less by its mechanics than by how it makes you feel.

## Where the genre came from

Cozy games are not new. The style recalls life-simulation games such as Harvest Moon (1996) and The Sims (2000). What changed was the name, and two big hits made "cozy game" a common phrase: Stardew Valley (2016) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020).

Stardew Valley was made by one developer, Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone, over about four and a half years. He grew up with the Harvest Moon series, and it shaped his work. The game has since sold more than 41 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games of all time. It proved that a gentle, low-key game could hold its own. Four years later, the genre clearly reached the mainstream.

## The lockdown moment

Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out on Nintendo Switch in March 2020, just as COVID-19 lockdowns began in many countries. The timing was remarkable. The game sold 11.77 million copies in its first 11 days, up to 31 March, and 13.41 million in its first six weeks.

It gave people stuck at home a routine, a sense of time moving forward and a way to see friends when real meetings were impossible. Players threw birthday parties on each other's islands, and one couple whose real wedding was postponed held a ceremony in the game instead, with friends visiting their island.

The wider industry followed. In April 2020, 18 games companies launched the #PlayApartTogether campaign with the World Health Organization, encouraging physical distancing and good hygiene. As Riot Games chief executive Nicolo Laurent put it, "Physical distancing shouldn't mean social isolation."

The popularity lasted beyond lockdown. As of June 2026, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the second best-selling Switch game of all time, according to Nintendo's figures.

## Stress relief players can feel

The simplest reason for the genre's success is that people want to relax. In the Entertainment Software Association's 2026 survey, 78% of American adults said stress relief is a benefit of video games, alongside fun (85%) and mental stimulation (79%).

Research also suggests gaming and wellbeing are not opposites. In 2020, researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute studied 3,274 players of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, using actual play time from the publishers rather than players' own estimates. They found a small but statistically significant link between time spent playing and wellbeing.

The researchers stressed one point: how players felt about the game, especially whether they enjoyed it, seemed to matter more than how long they played. That suits cozy games well. They are designed for enjoyment rather than pressure, often with few ways to fail.

This does not prove that cozy games improve mental health. The study found an association, not cause and effect, and it covered only two games. But it does challenge the old assumption that time spent gaming is time wasted.

## Built for people who don't call themselves gamers

Cozy games also lower the barrier to entry. Developers often describe them as the most approachable kind of game for people who do not think of themselves as gamers.

The reasons are clear. Cozy games rarely need fast reactions or complicated controls. Most let players set their own pace, and many have no way to lose. That makes them welcoming to new players, people coming back after a long break, or anyone tired after work.

The potential audience is huge. According to the ESA, the average American player is 37, and mobile is the most popular way to play, used by 80% of players. Many people who would never call themselves gamers still play something on their phone every week. Cozy games speak to that group: adults with little free time who want a relaxing, rewarding hobby rather than another competition.

## The industry takes notice

As the genre grew, so did support for it. Wholesome Games, a group that promotes gentle indie games, held its first Wholesome Direct showcase in 2020 with more than 50 indie games. By 2023 the showcase featured more than 70 games chosen for their gentle, uplifting nature.

Awards followed. In 2022, Unpacking, a game from Brisbane studio Witch Beam about taking belongings out of boxes and arranging them in a new home, won two BAFTA Games Awards, including the public-voted EE Game of the Year. A game with no combat and no enemies took one of the industry's best-known prizes.

Cozy games have also moved off the screen, with merchandise and brand tie-ins such as LEGO and Build-A-Bear Animal Crossing sets.

## Not always as cozy as it seems

The genre's popularity has also drawn criticism. Because "cozy" describes a feeling more than a set of rules, fans do not always agree on what counts. Some games labelled cozy put productivity ahead of relaxation, with task lists, errands and seasonal events that feel more like chores than a way to unwind.

Some developers have questioned the trend too. Davey Wreden, known for The Stanley Parable, set out to make a cozy game to recover from burnout. The result, Wanderstop, published by Annapurna Interactive in March 2025, became a game about burnout itself after he found the cozy formula did not fit what he needed to say.

So the advice for players is simple: a cozy game is only as relaxing as you let it be. Ignoring optional tasks and taking breaks between sessions keeps it cozy.

## Conclusion

Cozy games succeed because they meet basic needs for safety, abundance and gentleness. Instead of survival and constant competition, they let players slow down and enjoy something simple and satisfying.

Their rise owes a lot to the success of Stardew Valley and to Animal Crossing: New Horizons arriving at the start of the pandemic. But the lasting boom comes from players' wish for a break and a less punishing experience: a place where the main jobs are looking after a garden, decorating a home and enjoying a carefree afternoon.
